The Portland & Brunswick Squares Association
The Portland & Brunswick Squares Association was formed about 15 years ago. Its membership reflects the changes in these two magnificent squares and their surrounding streets. Many of the buildings are now people’s homes, which 5 years ago were almost entirely offices. We regard the present mix of residential and office (about 50/50) as good for the area and well-balanced.
There are still some empty sites and buildings and the Association has been active in trying to get these brought back into a use that contributes to a balanced community. The pressure is for ever more small flats and an inevitably transient population. It has also organised members into planting bulbs in Portland Square and urged the council to maintain the gardens better. The newly restored railings and generally improved gardens now make Portland Square what it once was: the finest square in Bristol. Brunswick Square is lagging behind, and needs attention.
The Association is active in supporting St Pauls Unlimited, the local neighbourhood renewal scheme in the delivery of its Neighbourhood Plan.
